Acorn Financial Services is a Milwaukee-based company specializing in financial solutions, wealth management, insurance, and employee pension plans and benefits. It was founded in 1984.
The breach resulted from a bad actor gaining access to incredibly sensitive personal information. They accessed names, birth dates, addresses, driver’s license numbers, social security numbers, financial account information, and other details regarding the victims’ accounts.
The breach most likely occurred via a phishing attack, as most hacks do. The breach was discovered after suspicious activity was noted, stemming from an employee email. The company promises there have been no disruptions in running victim accounts, nor was there any evidence that the accessed information had been used or misused in any way. The company still needed to alert victims under American law.
This breach occurred on August 22nd, 2022.
The breach impacts certain people that use Acorn Financial Services. Whether they used the company for a mortgage, insurance, investing, or another service the company offers, each of Acorn Financial’s customers should at least be on guard and more aware of any suspicious reports concerning their data.
The breach affects an undisclosed number of accounts. However, if the breach affects you or a loved one, you will be alerted via letter. A copy of this letter (sans addresses and names) was sent to the Vermont Attorney General’s Office.
