Dollar Energy Fund is a utility grants provider to families and individuals in need; they permeate Pittsburgh with 27 locations that serve people from the surrounding area. Those associated with the company should take immediate action to protect themselves.
The notice provided to the Maine Attorney General says Dollar experienced a “network disruption” and began an investigation. Dollar found that an unauthorized actor accessed some of the information stored on their network the days before. Nothing else is yet public about the attack.
The assailant accessed the Dollar Energy Fund network around January 31st, 2023, and remained there until February 5th. Immediately, the company investigated and completed their review on or around August 15th. Dollar Energy Fund sent consumer impact notices from September 28th until October 19th. If you have received a consumer notice regarding this breach, you must take immediate action to protect your data.
The Maine notice does not indicate who is specifically impacted by the breach but implies beneficiaries of the services they provide. The Maine filing lists 28,539 individuals as potentially impacted parties. The Dollar Energy Fund notice suggests identity and credit protections, fraud alerts, and other precautions.
There is no public information about the scope of the cyberattack or who may have committed it. Further, because Dollar notified their consumers before the state attorney generals, more information is unlikely. Those impacted by this breach must act to protect their financials and identities from theft.
