eCapital Corporation is a unique funding solution for small and medium-sized businesses. It was founded in 1993 and is based out of Florida.
eCapital Corporation recently reached out to some of its customers, notifying them of a data breach. eCapital acknowledged the breach after cyber thieves infiltrated the company’s website. Though the breach likely occurred in or before July of 2021, eCapital representatives do not seem to be entirely sure as to the specific date when hackers stole the data.
Hackers obtained unauthorized access to eCapital's internal systems. However, how the cyber miscreants accessed the company’s systems has not been revealed. Some reports indicate ransomware attackers might have encrypted the company’s data. However, those same supposed aggressors quickly erased lists of hacking accomplishments soon after posting them on the web, creating the impression that they might not be as prolific or effective as claimed.
This breach occurred in July 2021 or earlier.
The breach resulted in the theft of eCapital Corporation customer names, driver’s license numbers, Social Security numbers, and additional information. The eCapital digital attack reinforces the need to implement data breach alerts at your business, home, and other computing environments.
eCapital reached out to customers whose data might have been compromised in the breach. Though the company took decisive action to prevent additional unauthorized access to customer data, it did not specify the exact number of customers impacted by the attack.
Investigations into the data breach reveal hackers might have accessed the sensitive information of nearly 1,800 eCapital customers. This figure was calculated by legal investigators looking into the breach, meaning it is an estimate that has not been confirmed by eCapital.
