Formerly Kalispell Regional Healthcare, Logan Health is a Montana-based hospital chain. The hospital has many procedures and precautions in place to protect patient confidentiality.
Phishing scams are the most common type of hack in the world. In 2021, 80% of all cybersecurity events were phishing attacks. This hack was no different and resulted in hundreds of thousands of victims, and the stolen data included protected health information.
A statement from the hospital read, “This incident was a phishing scheme. In this case several employees clicked a malicious link disguised to look like a link from administration.” The letters sent to the victims included Logan Health’s CEO and President Dr. Craig Lambrecht’s signature.
This breach occurred on November 18th, 2021.
The breach impacted many individuals, the majority of which were Montanans. Over 200,000 people were affected by the breach, resulting in many patient questions. The primary patients affected were those of Logan Health Medical Center.
The breach affected 213,543 patients, 174,761 of which were Montana residents. The hospital assured affected patients they could still use their patient portal access details. “It’s important to remember that your credentials for the patient portal are separate from this incident,” read the statement. “Your access to the portal and was not part of what was accessed in this attack.”
