Tampa General Hospital is a tertiary care facility and learning hospital in Tampa, Florida. The hospital has more than 1,000 beds and serves its surrounding community well. The facility works with millions of individuals, and many of those individuals were just exposed because of a data breach at the hospital. The breach led to substantial data losses and caused serious problems for the hospital.
The Tampa General breach occurred because a team of hackers targeted the facility, broke into its file systems, and began to access information. While in the facility, the hackers were able to take data for more than 1.2 million people. The hospital reported the incident to the FBI and began working with the Bureau to get the issue sorted out.
The Tampa General breach ended on May 30, 2023. The attackers were inside the data network, intercepting file transfers and messages for three weeks before the attacks were stopped.
More than 1.2 million patients of Tampa General Hospital were impacted by this breach. Many of those individuals lost significant personal data, and the hospital is sending personalized letters to everyone whose Social Security Numbers were stolen.
