Cristal Bay Casino Data Breach

Crystal Bay Casino is a gambling establishment located in Lake Tahoe. The facility includes slots, table games, and sports betting and features a small hotel known as the Border House for gamblers to stay in luxury. This luxury casino was recently hit by an attack on its IT servers, and its customers may have had their confidential information exposed in the attack. Learn about the full scope of the attack and how the casino is responding to this incident to protect its customers.

How Did the Attack Occur?

In November of 2022, staff at the Crystal Bay Casino realized something odd was occurring on the IT network. In response to the strange way the network was behaving, the company's IT team secured the network to keep hackers out. While locking the servers down, it became clear to the staff that some files had been removed during the cyber attack. It wasn't until after a thorough investigation that Crystal Bay Casino realized confidential information was stolen.

What Information Was Viewed or Stolen?

During the attack on Crystal Bay Casino, hackers were able to remove private information, including driver's license numbers, first and last names, and the Social Security numbers of consumers held on the data network. Individuals that submitted their information to the casino for verification purposes may have been exposed due to this attack. It's unclear what the hackers plan to do with the gathered information, but it's likely it will be used for fraudulent purposes.

How Did Crystal Bay Casino Admit to the Breach?

The attack on Crystal Bay Casino exposed Social Security numbers and Driver's License numbers, so the company was obligated to share information about the attack with anyone involved, as well as the attorney generals of several states. The casino informed the Attorney General of California, Montana, Maine, and Massachusetts. It is in the California and Montana reports that we gathered our details for this news story. The casino also sent letters to 86,291 individuals that are all believed to be impacted by the breach.

What Will Become of the Stolen Information?

The Crystal Bay Casino consumer data that was stolen during this attack will likely be used for identity theft purposes and other fraudulent activities. It appears that the attackers were trying to steal confidential information exclusively, which is why they quickly removed specific files from the casino's network during the attack. All this information will be used to open financial accounts, take out lines of credit, and in an attempt to make fraudulent purchases.

What Should Affected Parties Do in the Aftermath of the Breach?

If you receive a notice from Crystal Bay Casino about this attack, you should take immediate action to protect your credit. Consider investing in credit monitoring services or an identity protection service. You could also put a freeze on your credit to prevent it from being usable by the attackers. Taking a few simple precautions can help you avoid serious damage to your credit and problems in the future.
