majestic care data breach

Majestic Care is a nursing home company that has more than 20 locations throughout Indiana. The organization serves elderly patients all over the state and manages a great deal of medical and financial information as a result. That's why it's so upsetting to hear that one of the company's 20 locations was hit by a cyber attack that resulted in the loss of data. If you or one of your loved ones uses the Middletown location, you may have lost important data and could be at risk.

How Did the Attack Occur?

Majestic Care recently suffered from a system's data breach at its Hamilton Middletown location. At that single location, the data systems were attacked, and disrupted, and patient information was taken. The breach occurred starting on December 13 and kept going until December 16, 2022. During those several days, the attacker was able to get away with a huge amount of patient information. We don't know specifically how the breach was possible, but third-party investigators suspect that malicious software was added to the systems somehow. Most likely, a successful phishing attack on one of the employees made the breach possible.

What Information Was Viewed or Stolen?

During the Majestic Care breach, patients may have had their first and last names, driver's license numbers, social security numbers, mailing addresses, telephone numbers, medical records, payment information, and more exposed. If your information was exposed in this breach, you will be at serious risk for identity theft attacks and may experience fraudulent purchases in your name.

How Did Majestic Care Admit to the Breach?

Majestic Care released an official statement during the last week of March 2023, informing the public that it suffered from a data breach. The statement was designed to make patients aware of the incident and to inform them that more specific notices would be going out to anyone whose information was involved in the breach.

What Will Become of the Stolen Information?

The stolen information taken from Majestic Care's file servers will either be used in data attacks to open fraudulent accounts and make purchases, or will be sold to another individual that will do the same thing. The information may also be used to carry out convincing phishing attacks to obtain additional information to be exploited. The attackers are likely looking for information they can profit from, and if your information is involved, your credit and finances can be damaged if you aren't careful.

What Should Affected Parties Do in the Aftermath of the Breach?

If you receive a notice from Majestic Care in Middletown or you suspect your information was misused, you should immediately start monitoring your accounts and looking at your credit history. Consider investing in a credit protection service to monitor and protect your accounts against fraud. Taking a few simple steps will help you remain aware of any potential attacks against you and help you avoid damage to your finances. You should also be careful about what emails you open and what information you provide via email to prevent any future phishing attacks against you from being successful.
