New companies are hurt by significant data breaches every week, especially in the United States. This week insurance companies were the big target. Prudential, Progressive, and a range of insurance providers that work with PH Tech were all hit by data breaches. Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and the Colorado Department of Higher Education were also victims of their own data breaches. Millions of individuals were exposed to potential data losses between these different breaches. Get the specifics on each of these upsetting data breaches below.
PH Tech
PH Tech was one of the most recent MOVEit data breaches to occur. This Oregon-based administration company works with insurance providers throughout Oregon, helping with customer service, verification, and more. The company suffered severe data losses on May 30, 2023, and sent out individual notices to nearly 1.7 million Oregon Health Plan members informing them their data was lost. If you receive any type of notice from the company, you should know that your personal and health data could have been lost. Insurance information, treatment options, as well as your Social Security number and other personal data may have been lost.
Colorado Department of Higher Education
On June 19, 2023, the Colorado Department of Higher Education learned its data network had been breached, and that information for countless students was exposed. The organization handles public education programs, initiatives, and data for public school students as well as adults using public learning programs. Anyone using public education systems in Colorado between 2004 and 2020 may have been impacted. The data lost includes Social Security numbers, home addresses, birth dates, government IDs, police records, and more.
Allegheny County, Pennsylvania
Allegheny County, PA, the 2nd largest county in the state, was the latest MOVEit file transfer service data breach victim to go on the list. The county utilized the MOVEit file transfer tool that recently experienced a significant security vulnerability, and countless organizations were impacted by it. The county was breached on June 1, 2023, and lost significant citizen data as a result. If you are notified of this breach, your personal details, including your Social Security number and government ID, may have been compromised.
Progressive Insurance
On May 19, 2023, the Progressive Insurance company learned one of its vendors suffered a data breach that could compromise as many as 347,100 customers. The breach occurred when the wrong people were given authorization to access confidential documents. Data points such as phone numbers, birth dates, Driver's license information, email addresses, and home addresses were involved. Individual notices were sent out to all believed to be impacted by the breach.
Prudential Insurance
The Prudential Financial Company represents millions of customers for financial and insurance needs in the United States. This company was recently involved in a data breach because of the MOVEit file transfer solution. A significant software vulnerability caused Prudential vendor PBI to lose huge pools of consumer data. Social Security numbers, birth dates, phone numbers, home addresses, and more were among the data lost. Over 320,000 Prudential customers were involved. Watch for notices from PBI to confirm your data was involved.
