It's been a rough week for major companies and the government as well, with the week finishing off with Washington D.C. lawmakers having their health information exposed. This week's attacks make it very clear that nobody is safe from cyber gangs and hackers. Dole, Dish Network, and Acer all suffered data losses this week, as well as the Crystal Bay Casino. Companies are having to invest more and more money in cyber protection in an effort to protect their employees and their customers from increasing attacks.
Dish Network
Dish Network, one of the leading companies offering satellite television broadcasts in the United States, was recently hit by a major ransomware attack. The company was the victim of a ransomware gang, and the attack was so severe that many Dish Network customers lost service for a short time. Dish Network serves over 7.4 million customers and has more than 16,000 employees. Dish Network hasn't disclosed what information was taken from its servers, if any, but the company will be required to disclose any personal consumer data that was lost if any serious losses occurred.
Dole
Food product leader Dole PLC was recently hit by a cyber attack that halted some of its deliveries and cut into the production chain in the United States. Customers have been complaining about salads not being delivered to their local stores, and Dole acknowledged that the shortages were caused by an attack on the company's servers. Dole wasn't willing to provide information about what information was stolen from its networks, but if any sensitive consumer data was taken, the company will be obligated to report it in the future. Dole is quickly working to restore its supply chain, but the massive ransomware attack hurt the company and slowed production significantly.
Crystal Bay Casino
Gamblers were hit hard by the cyber attack on the Crystal Bay Casino. In this attack, consumer information was stolen in massive quantities. Hundreds of individuals had their names and Social Security numbers taken by hackers. This information will likely be used for fraudulent activities, and the attack is a real problem for consumers that trusted Crystal Bay to protect their information. This attack is likely the most damaging to consumers and is a real problem for local gamblers. The casino shared details of the attack with several state attorney generals and estimated that more than 86,000 individuals were exposed because of this breach. It's a serious problem that shows how at risk electronic data puts customers.
Acer
Acer may have been hit by the most damaging data attack of all the companies this week. The company had data stolen from a file server loaded with files for its technicians this week. Among the more than 160 Gb of stolen files were manuals, disk images, replacement product keys, and proprietary company information. The company is working hard to secure its data, but it certainly lost some money due to this attack and the attack that occurred last October.
DC Health Link
DC Health Link was compromised on Tuesday, March 7th, releasing medical information, emails, and addresses of lawmakers and staff members on Capitol Hill. Hundreds of individuals and their families were exposed during this attack, and the FBI is still investigating the cyber attack to determine exactly who was affected and what information was lost.
