Progressive Insurance is one of the most well-known insurance providers in the United States today. The organization is based in Mayfield Village, Ohio, and extends to countless regional offices with over 49,000 individual employees throughout. The organization handles significant amounts of customer data on a daily basis and all that data was put at risk because of a recent breach.
The Progressive data breach occurred because Progressive depends on third-party companies to handle its customer service needs. One of these companies (which was unnamed) made a mistake when managing Progressive customer data. The mistake gave unauthorized individuals access to data impacting up to 347,100 Progressive customers. Once the access was made the situation had to be treated like a full-scale data breach, and it's a serious problem that could cause major problems for customers.
This data breach was discovered on May 19, 2023. At that point, Progressive began evaluating the situation and taking steps to identify what information was lost and what risks there were for identity theft problems.
As many as 347,100 Progressive customers may be impacted by this data breach according to the study conducted by Progressive with help from a third-party data solutions company.
There is no file count in relation to this data breach. There may have only been a few files involved, or the scope could extend to hundreds of thousands of documents. We only know that 347,100 customers were impacted.
